Pat Buchanan Hearts Hitler

Having spent the better part of the summer reading irate letters from readers who equate a picture of Roseanne Barr dressed as Domestic Goddess Hitler with Holocaust denial, Jewdar would like to point out to the haters that there are, in fact, real Hitler lovers out there who would make much more suitable targets of their ire. Take Pat Buchanan and his new book Churchill, Hitler and "The Unnecessary War". In a recent op-ed, an obvious plug for his new book that is more suited to Stormfront than any sort of mainstream site, Buchanan completely rewrites history. According to Buchanan, Hitler didn’t really want war in 1939, and it was Perfidious Albion (a.k.a England) that refused to make peace. Buchanan goes on to imply that, were it not for that, the Holocaust never would have happened.

What’s really funny here, of course, is that Buchanan is the kind of social conservative who rants about the dumbing down of American education and the inability of American students to know basic facts about history, and yet he has ignored a whole world of research and instead chosen (and it’s definitely a choice) to argue a position that is historiographically bankrupt. And there’s only one explanation for it. We’re sure it won’t matter in a week from now, but we’d like to see all these pundits who share roundtables with Buchanan on a regular basis put him in the hotseat. Buchanan should be shown the truth, and asked to explain his views in light of that truth, and if he still insists on sitting with Hitler in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g, then those shows that regularly give him a platform will have to decide if they want a guy whose panties get moist when he watches Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will.

Buchannan is a scholar, in the same way Miracle Whip can only be considered, marginally, a food product.
