It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Gilbert Gottfried over here at Heeb. So when the “comic’s comic” announced he’d be launching a new, showbiz-focused podcast, we got pretty excited.
Now that the first episode of “Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast” has dropped – and subsequently rocketed to the top of the iTunes podcast charts – it’s clear that the wait has been worth it. “”Amazing Colossal Podcast” seems to be taking shape as a mix between the conversational chats you’d find on Marc Maron’s WTF and Kliph Nesteroff’s tireless excavation of Hollywood from years long past; That is to say, ACP manages to be both incredibly funny and surprisingly thoughtful.
Episode 1 features an interview with Dick Cavett, whose seminal talk show eschewed Carson-esque broad-based television for an unexpectedly high caliber of guests from across the cultural landscape. Cavett makes for the perfect premier interviewee: He swaps stories and jokes with Gottfried, and co-host Frank Santopadre, with a breezy air that belies the depth and breadth of his encyclopedic knowledge of showbiz and culture. But it’s Gilbert, known to so many as simply “the comedian with that voice,” who propels the show forward – not as a comic, but as someone with his own deep appreciation of Hollywood history; ACP isn’t simply a place to tell jokes – it’s a place to tell stories. It’s that subtle difference that makes it such a pleasure to have Gottfried’s (in)famous voice blasting in our ears, despite Cavet’s complaint that his “earphones are so fucking loud that [he’s] dizzy… Can you say loud on this show?”
The show’s official description teases future guests such as: Paul Shaffer, Marty Allen, Billy West, “Godfather” actor Gianni Russo, Joe Franklin, Sara Karloff, and illustrator/cartoonist Drew Friedman. For now, though, listen to the first episode in its entirety below, and subscribe to Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast on iTunes or at the Sideshow Network.
You’re welcome.
