Jews apparently wore keffiyehs in ancient times. Beginning just a few years ago, contemporary Jewish keffiyehs were created and recast by both leftists and right-wingers in competing artistic and political expressions.
In terms of the Jewish keffiyeh, at least, the battle appears to be won by the right. No one to the left of Honest Reporting is going to feel comfortable wearing one after what this Shi 360 guy has done with the Jewish keffiyeh in the video for his first single, “Forgive and Forget” off his new album, Shalom Haters.
And maybe that’s how it has to be. After all, do Jewish doves really expect to beat hawks when it comes to ‘reclaiming’ territory traditionally understood as belonging to Arab Muslims?
Definitely enjoyed this new song by Shi. But i think you need to do some “Honest Reporting” on the history of the “Keffiyeh”.
Am I right that the implication of putting the word ‘reclaiming’ in scare quotes in this context is because the keffiyeh, like the land of Israel, is traditionally understood to be Arab Muslim? Do people think of Israel as being traditionally Arab?
And if they do, what of it? Many things “traditionally understood” are similarly wrong. The traditional Western understanding that blacks are somehow inferior: wrong. The traditional understanding that homosexuality is immoral: wrong. The traditional understanding that Israel is, in some immutable sense, Arab Muslim territory: also wrong.
I’m more dove than hawk, but the article’s snark is pretty wrong-headed in my opinion.
