Bad News for the Jews

Thisweekend’s shootings at a Tel-Aviv gay clubis both a personal and political tragedy. Personal, of course, because innocent people were murdered. Political, because if it proves to have been religiously motivated, it highlights, particularly after weeks of Haredi rioting, the increasing–and increasingly violent–factionalism of Israel. It also doesn’t bode well for the state’s already dismal rep in the more progressive parts of the world. Call it an apartheid state if you want to, but one thing you could always count on was that it was the one place in the Middle East where gays didn’t have to worry about being murdered in the street.
