On Wednesday night, notorious lounge singer Tony Clifton returned to the stage with the Katrina Kiss My Ass Orchestra at New York’s BB Kings on 42nd Street. In case you don’t know, Clifton originated as the late comedian Andy Kaufman’s alter ego, is a brash loud mouth crooner who takes pleasure in telling off-color jokes and berating his audience.
Last night’s audience was 95 percent male with an occasional girlfriend wondering why the hell her boyfriends would bring them to see this misogynist on date night. Nevertheless, the entire audience squealed with delight when he tossed his whiskey or lit cigarettes out at them. In between rounds of black, gay and pedophile jokes, Clifton sang amazing renditions of 70s favorites. During his performance of “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast” by the great Wayne Newton, for instance, he stopped mid- song to tell his sad tale of childhood bed-wetting and his prick father’s method of getting him to stop (by using his “pee pee” as an ashtray). Cancer, the Holocaust, lynching and child molestation also occupied a substantial portion of the act. After three and a half hours, I left the club emotionally drained and psychologically damaged, but with a big stupid grin on my face.
Tony Clifton will be performing in honor of the 25th anniversary of Andy Kaufman’s death through May 2009. For more info, go to www.tonyclifton.net.
