Everyone knows the oft-repeated Holocaust refrain of “never forget”. But this is the internet, and here byte-sized memes rule the roost; The Buzzfeedification of online nostalgia has changed the paradigm of remembrance from never forgetting to “Look at us! We’re remembering!”
Exhibit A) This image, found on Lithuanian comedy site juodai.lt, and seemingly created on the meme-generating icanhascheezeburger.com.
So what is it? A tasteless joke? Meta-commentary on the internet’s tendency to cheapen important things by adding bold, white font? Perhaps it’s a genuine attempt to give Holocaust education an update for the internet age. I don’t know. But it’s got my attention.
