That’s So Eno

All right, we admit, we’re always pleased when a celebrity says something nice about Israel, but can the rest of them please shut up, already? I mean, if Bono doesn’t condemn Israel, what makes you think you can?

Recently, an English rally against "the massacre in Gaza" featured such luminaries as Brian Eno and Annie Lennox (for most of you reading this, they were in bands when mommy and daddy were young). Eno (above, wearing 1970’s glam-rock ape drape) is particularly annoying, exuding the kind of smug self-righteousness which can only derive from complete mastery of a subject, or, as in his case, absolute ignorance. "Israel is using the attack as a cover for building settlements?" They must be doing a good job, since Israel hasn’t had a settlement there since 2005. "Israel provoked the Gazans by denying them food, medicine, sanitation, etc?" Funny, because again, Israel left in 2005, and Gaza could have had all that stuff, except that Hamas (elected by the people of Gaza in 2006), chose to attack Israel instead.

As for Lennox, we’re willing to cut her some slack, since she had an Israeli husband for over a decade so she may have some legitimate issues with the Jewish state. But what kills us about her and her peers is how they insist that they care–as a mother, a woman, a human, etc–about all the civilians whose lives are threatened, but only voice their concern when the civilians being killed are Palestinian. You want to convince Jewdar you care, Annie? Then next time Hamas launches missiles at Sderot, why don’t you condemn them the way you condemn Israel now? Sweet dreams are made of this…
