Ron Arad at the MoMa: The _Heeb_ Review

Israeli architect, designer and artist Ron Arad has been creating work existing in the realm of conceptualized and actualized projects for over 30 years. In the ’80s and ’90s he was increasingly known as a rebel designer, going against the norm of traditional design rules. It is apt then that the title of his first major museum show in the U.S. is Ron Arad: No Discipline, on view now at the New York’s MoMa through October 19, 2009.

In this major survey of his work, viewers are privy to–for first time in one room–the breadth of London-based Arad’s work, all either encased or placed around a massive steel structure, the "Cage sans Frontières." This winding, site specific skeleton that weaves throughout the exhibition hall is dotted with Arad’s signature "Well Tempered and Bad Tempered" chairs (made out of cold steel and glass and carbon respectively) and houses a variety of pieces dating back to 1981 through 2009. The entire installation is punctuated by "Lolita," a spiral, payos-shaped chandelier, fabricated with 2,100 Swarovski crystals and 1,050 white LEDs. Through LED technology, the sculpture displays text messages sent to the museum throughout the exhibition (text Lolita: 917-774-6264).

As much as Arad’s work should be appreciated, the installation stifles his individual accomplishments. Singular pieces aren’t allowed to breathe or be properly viewed in their entirety, therefore, a casualty to how the work is arranged becomes Arad’s attention to detail and form, with the show at times looking more like a high-end furniture showroom than exhibition. Furthermore, some of Arad’s most brilliant creations are missing entirely, however, this may be due to the entire survey being housed in one of the smallest rooms in the museum.

That said, for all my qualms with the curation, the exhibition is still a wonder and a testament to one man’s truly fascinating ouvere. It is also a relevant study of the intersection of art and design and well worth the journey that the explorative exhibition takes you through.
