Neutral Milk Hotel Inspires Anne Frank Fantasy

Dresden Dolls founder and long-time Neutral Milk Hotel fan Amanda Palmer is bringing Anne Frank’s story to the stage–the high school stage. The Lexington High School alum urged theater director Steven Bogart and his drama department to write the play With the Needle That Sings in Her Heart, depicting Frank’s final months at Bergen-Belsen with a twist inspired by indie rock darlings, Neutral Milk Hotel. The band’s 1998 album, Aeroplane Over the Sea, contained lyrics that reference Anne Frank, though never directly.

"I know they buried her body with others / Her sister and mother and 500 families / And will she remember me, 50 years later / I wish I could save her in some sort of time machine."

— "Oh, Comely"

In the play, Frank escapes into a world where prisoners and Nazi officers become circus performers. I wonder who will score the role of Joseph Goebbels–the contortionist or the asshole on stilts.
