Looks like evolution is moving “much more rapidly”:http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSN1043228620071210 than our high-school biology teachers predicted. Researchers say that “beneficial genetic changes have appeared at a rate roughly 100 times higher in the past 5,000 years than at any previous period of human evolution.” And “about 7 percent of human genes are undergoing rapid, relatively recent evolution.”
So will we soon realize that utopian vision of mixed-race, multi-cultural beauties living together in harmony? Nope, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
“[G]enetic evidence shows that people worldwide have been getting less similar rather than more similar” and most of the changes have been isolated by region. “Africans have new genes providing resistance to malaria. In Europeans, there is a gene that makes them better able to digest milk as adults. In Asians, there is a gene that makes ear wax more dry.”
Great. Consider my dreams of great-great-great-grandchildren gleefully consuming cheesecake and ice cream effectively dashed.
