Watching Tinkerbell handcuffed and carted off into a police van isn’t exactly what we expect to see at Disneyland. But that’s just what happened last Thursday outside the gates of the Happiest Place on Earth.
Awe-induced tots and tweens watched as Cinderella, Snow White and other familiar costumed-employees (32 in total), were arrested for protesting low wages and proposed health care cuts to Disneyland hotel staff.
Apparently, Disney hotel salaries are lower there than they are other hotels in the area and to add insult to injury, the company wants to eliminate a free health-care plan that exists for full-time employees by replacing them with part-time staffers. In the past, Disney has paid for a share of health care for most of their employees, but union negotiations have been at a stalemate since February, when the contract expired.
If you ask me, Disney head honcho Bob Iger should start by forking over some of that cool $28 million he made last year–although it is kinda funny to see Mickey get gaffled.
