Latke Lessons

Around this time of the year, kitchen cretins like yours truly tend to whip up latkes from “the same old recipe”:http://www.fabulousfoods.com/recipes/side/potatoes/latkes.html, but a wealth of alternatives to the standard fried potato with apple sauce are increasingly accessible. This week, _Chow_ Magazine’s “potato-turnip duck fat latke”:http://www.chow.com/stories/10802 and _New York_ Magazine’s “south-of-the border take”:http://nymag.com/restaurants/recipes/inseason/41522/ serve up two innovative alternatives. Of course, for those of us bound to botch these recipes, it can’t hurt to prepare plenty of “hooch”:http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/a-latke-vodka-party for your dinner guests.

These do sound amazing……though far removed from our collective latke memories. Do you remember the Hebrew School party (hockey puckesque ) defrosted frozen latke??
