Donna Karan is so wacky and quirky. She’s always sporting high-water yoga culottes and massive pieces of meteorite-looking jewelry whenever I see her on a red carpet.
With Fashion Week approaching and all these designers dropping out because of that pesky little fact that some call ‘money,’ I thought it would be good to ask the world’s leading designing Jewess what a smart financial move might be.
"I think we, the world, is going through a very difficult time," she told me at her late husband Stephan Weiss’s studio space for a book signing of famed photog Russell James.
"The most important thing that can happen is for commerce to not die because if we’re in bad shape now, we’ll be in far graver shape. People still love to get dressed so when you put something on you need to feel good outside and inside. I think we’re going through a shock at the moment. When people realize the consciousness of what it means to buy a garment, that every one of our lives it touches in one way or another, from the sewing people to the fabric people to the factory people. You have to do it respectfully and recognize this is a difficult time. We’ve gone through difficult times like this before. But you still want to feel good in your clothes, comfortable and dress up. Fashion week will never be dead!"
Karan went on to claim that Jewishness was a major influence in her wares:
"How can I not design with my Jewish identity in mind? I love to go to Israel. I would say it is a national pride. It’s having the access of being part of a nomadic, of being so out there."
What? Hmmm?
