Introducing Boaz Yakin’s (Latest) Transgressive Jewish Film

Given our proper Midwestern upbringing, Jewdar hates to be ungrateful. So, we’d like to begin by thanking Boaz Yakin and everybody associated with Boaz Yakin for the invitation to a screening of his new Holocaust-themed tour-de-force, Death in Love. Having said that, we must now proceed to note that for years, certain persons associated with Heeb have longed for an opportunity to vent fully on the Yakin penned and directed monstrousity, A Price Above Rubies, which featured Renee Zellweger as a young Chasidic bride caught up in an affair with a Puerto Rican guy. Now, Jewdar loathed the movie, but not as much as we loathed A Shiksa Among Us. But according to one well informed source (who, being both gay and Jewish, and can be considered a Hollywood insider), a certain future Heeb publisher was so enraged by the movie that he stood up in the theater and began booing.

Now, Jewdar is nothing if not magnanimous, and we’d like to give Yakin the benefit of the doubt. It may be that Death in Love is the best movie about a concentration camp inmate who sleeps with an SS officer to survive and raises two messed up sons, one of whom develops a relationship of some sort to Adam Brody, ever made. But the first step to teshuva is admitting you transgressed, and the fact that Yakin’s pr people didn’t even mention his earlier Jew-themed film in the press for this one, suggests that while Yakin may realize how awful it was, he’s not yet willing to come clean about it. The ball is in your court, Boaz. We’re ready to pardon you, are you ready to seek our pardon?

What do you think?
