Nothing says summer superhero blockbuster like a schlubby Jewish comedian and a French art-house director. Michel Gondry has now signed on to direct Seth Rogen in the film version of The Green Hornet.
Hong Kong sensation Stephen Chow (Kung-Fu Hustle) was originally slated to direct, but bowed out over creative differences. He remains on board to play sidekick Kato, the role played by Bruce Lee in the ’60s TV version.
Gondry, best known for visually impressive if non-linear fare such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep, reportedly got the gig after a presentation that wowed the studio. The script is by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who wrote hits Superbad and Pineapple Express together.
The Green Hornet is a masked crime fighter who originally appeared in a 1930s radio series before spreading to film serials, comic books and television. In most incarnations his alter ego is Britt Reid, a newspaper publisher by day and vigilante by night. In the original mythology, the character is actually the grand-nephew of the Lone Ranger, both of whom share a creator in Fran Stiker.
Columbia Pictures, the studio behind the Spider-Man trilogy, has set a release date in June, 2010. The studio has a fourth Spidey movie on its production slate for the following summer.
