It’s been three years to the month since the much-beloved Arrested Development went off the air, but fans have finally received the news they’ve been waiting for. Michael Cera, the last major cast member to hold out from the planned film version, has reportedly agreed to rejoin the Bluths.
While stars such as David Cross, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Jeffrey Tambor had long been game, Cera, whose career leaped greatly after the series ended with turns in Superbad and Juno, was the least sure he wanted to return to the character that first put him on the map.
The script for the film was written by Mitchell Hurwitz, the series’ creator. He has also been reported as the movie’s director, though IMDb currently lists the director as Ron Howard, who served as the show’s narrator and executive producer.
Howard told Ryan Seacrest at the Oscars on Sunday that, "It’s looking very much like we’re going to make [the movie], but we’ve now been asked to stop offering any details. It’s cloaked in a little mystery, but it’s looking good."
The series’ six Emmys and one Golden Globe weren’t enough to stop Fox from finally having to cancel it after 40 episodes across three short seasons. The show’s production companies 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine Television had agreed to move it to Showtime for a fourth season, but when Hurwitz walked away after reported problems with 20th Century Fox, the plug got pulled. Hurwitz hinted at the time that he’d consider reuniting the Bluths for a feature.
