Like the L.A. Lakers, Lizzy Cooperman moved from frozen Minnesota to Los Angeles for greater exposure, both from the sun and for her career. In anticipation of her appearance at the Jewlicious Festival this weekend, Cooperman talks to Heeb about almost performing for the Orthodox, some of her odd jobs and what her crack-addicted boss liked to watch on TV.
First joke you ever told?
‘Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the shoelace.’ I thought this was a great joke when I was four because no one knew the answer, yet it was so obvious to me this particular chicken needed just one shoelace. Comedy gold.
Ever miss Minnesota?
Around the first of every month, I miss writing a rent check for $450.

Are your Jewish parents disappointed with your non-medical or legal career?
No. I’m a second-generation disappointment.
Craziest gig you’ve ever booked?
I ended up canceling. An Orthodox woman and her three friends booked me to perform for just them in her living room. She wanted it ‘clean and non-offensive,’ and kept asking me over the phone, ‘But are you going to make us laugh?’ It was a battle between money and ego, and ego won. And then Eggos won. Ate like ten Eggos.
Any new jokes you’ve written that you’d like to share with our Heeb readers?
What a day. Now all I have to do is throw this ring into Mordor.
What’s more offensive to you, being called a Jewish comedian or being called a woman comedian?
I’m not offended by either. They’re both true. When a host brings me up and says, ‘Your next comedian is female,’ I’m just thinking, ‘Yeah, they’ll find that out in a second.’
Tell me about your Jobologist series.
I get bad memories about day jobs I’ve had and lash out with my handheld Canon.
Will you share some bad memories from day jobs?
I was a live-in nanny and discovered that my boss was on crack. He basically kept me up every night until sunrise wanting company while he watched the Angels in America HBO movie.
I also once ‘booked a commercial’ that turned out to be for a pornographic video store. It came out with a triple-X flashing right below me on the screen. That was pretty embarrassing. It aired right before my sister’s wedding. I was also just starting doing comedy and people would say, ‘You look so familiar!’ and I’d say, ‘No, no, I don’t.’
If you were a cover band, who would you cover?
First, I would cover myself in money, because I would cover Weird Al Yankovic. If there’s a Weird Al cover band reading this, sorry for ripping off your idea.
What has been your favorite moment onstage so far?
Definitely Michael Jackson’s Motown 25th Anniversary Performance.
