Michael Seifert, a Canadian citizen of Ukrainian origin who also operates under the alias "The Beast of Bolzano" is being extradited from Canada to Italy today to face charges he was convicted of in 2000.
Apparently, the 83-year-old has been hiding out for years and, while our neighbors to the north don’t mind draft dodgers they’re not too fond of former SS agents. And they definitely don’t like lying. After discovering that Seifert had hidden his past when entering the country, the Canadian government stripped him of his rights as a Canadian citizen and got the Italian police on the phone. Seifert was convicted in absentia of nine murders committed while he was an SS guard at a prison transit camp in Bolzano, Italy. Although many believe it is important for Seifert to serve time for his crimes, if only to teach other war criminals a lesson, the Italian prosecutors are most interested in Seifert as a witness who will help them nail down other cases. Due to his age, prosecutors say it is likely Seifert will live out his term under house arrest, provided he can find someone willing to host him in Italy.
Hmmm… who’s vying to have the Beast of Bolzano crash on their couch?
