Last year, Ari Sandel’s “_West Bank Story_”:http://www.westbankstory.com/ somehow won an Academy Award for “Best Live Action Short Film.” The film told the story of an Israeli soldier falling for a Palestinian fast food cashier and their families’ competing falafel stands in…natch, the West Bank. Well, last week we got a chance to see the latest installment of West Side Story-inspired Israeli-occupation flicks: Eytan Fox’s “_The Bubble_,”:http://www.myspace.com/thebubblemovie which focuses on the relationship between Noam and Ashraf, a Palestinian guy he meets while on army reserve duty at a West Bank checkpoint.
Fox, who made “_Yossi & Jagger_”:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0334754/ in 2002 and “_Walk on Water_”:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0352994/ in 2004, once again proves himself adept at taking the pulse of contemporary Israeli identity. The characters who populate his cinematic universe are just how we like ’em: hot, horny and ambivalent. They aren’t unpatriotic, but their primary allegiance is the restless search for true love, even during the most politically-charged moments. Dubbed by Rotten Tomatoes as “the prince of the Kosher New Wave,” Fox is also Israel’s answer to Pedro Almodovar. What Mother is to the Spanish director, the Other is to Fox: an all-consuming power capable of eliciting feelings of desire, loss and anger. _The Bubble_, which is now showing in select theaters nationwide, is no ordinary story of “Boy meets boy. Boy loses boy. Boy joins jihad.”
