_Mysteries of Pittsburgh_ Revealed

The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, the film based on Michael Chabon’s debut novel, had a good week during Sundance 2009. Too bad it actually premiered at Sundance 2008. A full year later, it has finally found a distributor and is set for a spring release.

The production is most famous for the scandal that ensued when Sienna Miller dubbed the city "Shittsburgh" while shooting on location in 2006. Miller, who at the time was more famous for dating Jude Law than any of her own work, went on to say, "Can you believe this is my life? Will you pity me when you’re back in your funky New York apartment and I’m still in Pittsburgh? I need to get more glamorous films."

Apparently she was right that Mysteries wasn’t very glamorous, since a movie taking a full year after Sundance to find distribution is not a promising sign. The film was directed by Dodgeball helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber, and also features Mena Suvari, Peter Sarsgaard and Nick Nolte.

Chabon, who wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and The Yiddish Policeman’s Union had much better luck with the adaptation of his second novel, Wonder Boys, in 2000. The film won Bob Dylan an Oscar for Best Original Song, and features strong performances from Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey Jr., Frances McDormand and even Katie Holmes.

Kavalier & Clay has been in development by Scott Rudin for some time now.
