_Heeb_ Best of 5769: Television

There’s just a few days left before the Ladies of ’69 calendar comes off the wall and the Jewish year 5769 becomes 5770. We’re considering fireworks and a night of pickpocketing in Times Square, but instead we’re using the opportunity to reflect upon the best the past year had to offer in the arts and culture. So here’s the best in television of the lunar year 5769 from the loonies here at Heeb.

1. Eastbound and Down (HBO)

Danny McBride’s Kenny Powers is probably the most unsympathetic hero you’ll ever find yourself rooting for. A defeated egomaniac who falls from the graces of Major League Baseball after a steroid/coke binge, he returns to small town North Carolina and becomes a substitute teacher. In an era in which Emmy nominations are routinely handed out for quaint, middlebrow performances (Jim Parsons, anyone?), McBride plays the kind of coke-binging, insecure, fat fuck television needs. Powers makes Archie Bunker, Al Bundy and Homer Simpson look like Ward Cleaver. BRIAN ABRAMS

2. True Blood (HBO)

3. Delocated (Cartoon Network/Adult Swim)

4. Dollhouse (FOX)

5. South Park (Comedy Central)

6. Mad Men (AMC)

7. Summer Heights High (HBO)

8. Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! (Cartoon Network/Adult Swim)

9. Gossip Girl (CW)

10. 30 Rock (NBC)
