Controversial shot-gun weddings must run in the family, at least for the Sarkozy clan. Wednesday night, Jean Sarkozy, the son of the French President and infamous tabloid star, Nicolas Sarkozy, wed his longtime girlfriend in a hush-hush civil ceremony after a 2-month-long engagement.
Who cares? Well, the 22-year-old political-celeb married one of France’s hottest Japs, Jessica Sebaoun-Darty. She’s the heiress to the multi-billion dollar Darty fortune, the country’s largest electronic emporiums.
Now, I’ve met a few members of the Darty clan on their regular trips to South Beach. Fashion victims notwithstanding, they’re actually mostly down-to-earth, nothing like our own Paris Hilton-types.
But the young power couple can’t avoid popular scrutiny even by keeping the press out. Anti-semitic controversy broke out over the summer when a well-known newspaper satirist intimated that Jean would soon be converting to Judaism in order to further political goals and wealth. And in France, a hotbed for anti-Semitic conjecture, this is easy fodder for lawsuits.
Quickly learning from this and perhaps dad’s attention-whoring ways, they wedding was very private, leaving the press begging for more.
