Happy National High Five Day

Heeb wishes you a happy National High Five Day, which occurs on the third Thursday of each April. The holiday originated at the University of Virginia in 2002 and provides a time for everyone to celebrate the practice of the "High Five." The holiday’s official website offers fun ways to celebrate the holiday (Ex: set up a free lemonade stand to increase your ability to give more high fives to strangers) and traces the origin of the High Five back to the Vietnam War. Apparently, the greeting originated in the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry regiment, which was commonly referred to as "The Five." Soldiers from this battalion would greet each other by extending one arm straight up in the air with five fingers parted and state the name of their division: “Five.” When the son of one of these soldiers became a Murray State college basketball star, he took the greeting with him, and the rest is history.
