Long before you had the munchies, played Grand Theft Auto to exhaustion and fell asleep spooning your bong, the Chinese were smoking killer green bud with their shamans and mummifying loved ones with the herb. The Toronto Star reports that the oldest stash of marijuana, which dates back 2,700 years, has been discovered in far western China. The 787 grams of cannabis, an amount of which would sell for about $8,000 in today’s markets, was found buried alongside an ancient Caucasian man, most likely the shaman of the Gushi culture, and most likely a huge Snoop Dogg fan.
Ethan B. Russo, lead author of the article published in the Journal of Experimental Botany, explained, "It was common practice in burials to provide materials needed for the afterlife. No hemp or seeds were provided for fabric or food. Rather, cannabis as medicine or for visionary purposes was supplied."
