After weeks of obsessively chatting about being on Broadway, Jeremy Piven has suddenly dropped out of David Mamet’s Speed the Plow, citing high levels of mercury in his system and his doctors ordering him to put the play on hold.
Mamet doesn’t buy it. I love his comment about Piven’s sudden and costly bailout:
"I talked to Jeremy on the phone and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury," said Mamet to Daily Variety. "So my understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer."
Strange. Last week, at the Mickey Rourke Wrestler afterparty, Piven told me:
"I’m on stage and we’re doing 8 shows a week performing. We perform and it’s amazing. It’s pretty amazing to be up there like that in a time like a recession. People are coming to the theater and spending their hard-earned money and I love it. Its great to do my thing and feel they can escape, and I love it!"
Rumor has it that Piven’s been living la vida Lohan. He is rumored to have showed up to past performances at the very last minute and before he stopped plowing, he was a no-show to two shows — Tuesday night’s show and Wednesday’s matinee performance. Piven was contractually obligated to perform in the show until February.
