Earlier today, _Spin_ Magazine and “Music Nation”:www.MusicNation.com announced that they will be collaborating on a new project called The Hot Pursuit, “an online rock challenge” aimed at discovering the “next breakout artist.” The winner gets a record deal with Epic, an invitation to perform at _Spin’s_ 2008 SXSW party and song inclusion on an upcoming 2K video game. The losers? Well, they get to have their very own artist profile at _www.spin.com/thecompetition_ where they can submit their videos, mp3s and photos and not get paid. The judges of this “Myspace meets _American Idol_” are Tim Kasher (Saddle Creek), Doug Brod, (Editor, _Spin_ Magazine) and Perry Farrell.
It shouldn’t surprise to see Farrell playing the part of Paula Abdul/David Hasselhoff. Farrell jumped the lox years ago (actually, around the same time he became a “born-again Jew”:http://www.heebmagazine.com/articles/view/63), but it seems like the stream of scorn aimed at him has intensified since Lollapalooza earlier this month. Last week, “The Daily Storm”:http://www.thedailyswarm.com/swarm/wtf-happened-perry-farrell/ pondered Perry’s cultural relevance and the future of Lolla.
I love his “Revolution Solution” with Thievery Corporation.
Nothing comprises artistic integrity like getting involved in a talent search contest with fabulous prizes. Next he’ll be handing out oversized checks with balloons for publishers clearinghouse.
