Guys, can you please stop with “The Knishery may be closing!” rumors? I spoke with Alex Volfman, manager at Yonah Schimmel’s Knishes, and he says the knishery is not being pushed out. And yes, Heeb has had a working relationship with The Knishery in the past (We run ads, they supply our knish habit) but we’re also invested in delicious Jewish food with a century of history behind it for its own sake. Anyway, not sure who is ultimately spreading these rumors, but we went straight to the source to set the record straight:
“We’ve been here for over 100 years, and are planning to stay another hundred” Ellen Anistratov, manager, told us.
Here’s a thought: If you want to show how much you love the knishery, go to the store and buy some knishes. If you can’t make it to the L.E.S., well, Fairway stocks them, as do select gourmet grocery stores and delis throughout the city. If you reside in any other city besides New York, you can have them shipped.
But really, better to just go there. This is part of why you live in or visit NYC, isn’t it? For specific cuisine this delicious and readily available. If you would like some guidance, well, my personal favorites (besides classic potato) are spinach and toasted garlic & onion. Goes well with a bowl of vegan split pea and a glass of borscht.
So bring a friend, eat a knish, and gossip about something else.
