It’s Pesach season, and NPR has taken its dispassionate, muti-culti curiosity to the Matzah factory. The piece explains the making of the most bubonic chronic matzah of all, shmura matzah, which takes normal matzah and sweetens it with the honey of strict rabbinic oversight. Very strict. MMMMM!
Still, it’s hard to listen to the sound of that machine pounding out slave crackers and not get all nostalgic for the din of awkward multi-generation conversation, the pleas for dinner over the recitation of the Haggaddah, and the pleasure of that diabetic coma hangover brought on by god’s mandate.
