John Oliver, star of HBO’s wickedly funny Last Week Tonight, is a pretty smart guy. And he’s in showbiz. So, as a pretty smart guy in showbiz, it stands to reason that he’d probably know how to speak a little yiddish. At last week’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner, that theory was (finally!) confirmed when, at the prompting of Rabbi and blogger Jason Miller, Oliver let loose with every piece of yiddish he knows.
So…okay, three words. And, yeah, “Shalom” isn’t technically yiddish. Still, it’s better than nothing, although not, I’m afraid, enough to forgive him for his role as “Dick Pants” in The Love Guru.
