Last week, Jewish settlers in the West Bank protested when Facebook, at the prompting of West Bank Palestinians, changed the home country of West Bank accounts from Israel to Palestine. Asking Facebook to change their home country back to Israel, citizens of Maale Adumim, Ariel and other large Jewish settlements in the West Bank accused the twentysomething social networking kingpins of having a political agenda. The Facebook peeps plead ignorance, and yesterday made a quick change, allowing West Bank residents to list either Palestine or Israel as their home country. Some Palestinian groups protested, stating that if Palestine were removed from Facebook they would cancel their accounts. Who said remove? Facebook’s execs fired back that they would simply allow people to select which country they called home. Still, the debate sparked the creation of two new Facebook groups: the "Palestine is a country!" group (nearly 2,000 members) and the "It’s not ‘Palestine’, it’s ‘Israel’!" group (nearly 14,000 members).

Meanwhile, the company has yet to respond to recent protests over the number of borderline illegal sites hosted within its network, from betting sites to pro-terrorist groups.
