David Mamet to Bring Anne Frank Back to the Big Screen

Pulitzer Prize-winner David Mamet will be writing and directing a new film about Anne Frank, to be released by Disney.

The film will draw on Frank’s original diaries, the famous Broadway play by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich and original material by Mamet to frame the story (Perhaps he will Basterdize his script and Anne Frank will finally get to kick some Nazi ass.)

Mamet, no stranger to controversy, has tackled Jewish subjects before, including in his 2006 essay collection The Wicked Son: Anti-Semitism, Self-Hatred and the Jews. That book made reference to Jews "whose favorite Jew is Anne Frank and whose second-favorite does not exist."

While no casting has been announced, we can only hope they cast the same Jewish hottie whom we saw star in the 1997 Broadway revival — if she’s not considered too old by now.

What do you think?

Overlooked? Multiple books, plays. films…and what was her great achievement?
Golda Meir is far more ‘overlooked’ than this tween friendly young girl.
And Disney? Doing the Diary Of Anne Frank?
Wonder if the Disney Execs have found a nice blonde, bl

I’d rather see Lars von Treir tackle this. Anne’s story deserves a sense of escapism and fantasy, just as her diary was her outlet to flee her unhappy reality. Why give this piece to someone who will surely craft a gritty, and harsh film?

Knowing Mamet and his Jewish spiritual awakening, he’ll most likely really Jew Anne up. Who knows? Maybe dress her in one of Seth Rogan’s “superjew” t-shirts. I’d also rather see someone like LVT tackle this.

    Wait, hold up…
Disney??? A company founded by who we’re all pretty sure was an anti-Semite?
What’s next? The Country Music Channel commissioning the Fredrick Douglass story?

Um, has “bobbycotter1” even READ The Diary of Anne Frank?
Shhhh……Let’s not ruin his storybook ending.
He must be anticipating the Disney version, too.

    Hungry,
There would have to be a lot of ball gags and other devices for muffling in said film, for sure.
