Bitter Francaise

This is just weird. Remember all that hooplah last year about Suite Francaise? Yeah, we didn’t read it either, but we heard it was good. It was written by Irene Nemirovsky, a Ukrainian Jew living in France, during her time in Auschwitz. The book was cobbled together from Nemirovsky’s hand-written notebooks, and is actually comprised of the first two novellas in what was meant to be a five-part series a la War and Peace. Critics couldn’t kiss the book’s ass enough, but now Nemirovsky’s daughter has had some of her earlier works published and it turns out she may have been anti-Semitic. Or at least that’s what people are saying, and not just because she converted to Catholicism before the war. When we read the sentence, "Golder looked with a kind of hatred at Fischel, as if at a cruel caricature. Fat little Jew … he had a comical, vile, and slightly sinister air," we wonder what it would take for people to be convinced.

What do you think?
