_Holy Land Hardball_: Searching for Sandy Koufax

Boston businessman Larry Baras hit it big with his "UnHoley Bagel.” (A bagel that comes pre-stuffed with cream cheese. Pure genius.) And with his bagel cash, Baras went on to realize an even more improbable dream: bringing the American pastime of baseball to Israel. The results were far messier and less tasty.

Following a ragtag team of misfits, Holy Land Hardball captures the Israel Baseball League (IBL) during its one and only year of existence. Players include Eric Holtz, a middle-aged family man with an intense Peter Pan complex, Nate Fish, a cool artist/dj from Brooklyn and Willis Bumphus, a 22-year-old African-American whose preacher told him he was “destined to play in front of God’s people.”

Showing an entirely new side of Israel and its culture, this funny, award-winning documentary truly understands the magic of the great American pastime. Sadly, Israel was just immune its charms.

Watch Holy Land Hardball on the MLB Network this Sunday, January 10 at 10 p.m.
