Here are a few of our favorite recent releases:
Alight of Night
Imagine Joy Division covering The Ronettes or The Smiths going lo-fi. Crystal Stilts (pictured) have found themselves are all over the blogosphere the last few months and with good reason. Their newest release on the legendary Slumblerland Records (Stereolab, Lilys, Black Tambourine) is 11 songs of pure gloom-pop.
Trust us. Listen to "The Dazzled."
Lou Reed
Berlin Live at St. Anns Warehouse
Speaking of gloom, old man Reed decided to play the most depressing album of all time (his 1973 ode to a couple of doomed junkies) live and the Julian Schnabel decided to film it. Now Matador has released the soundtrack.
Trust us. Listen to "Caroline Says Pt. 2."
Rope Chain
Straight up weird shit. Grampall Jookabox somehow evokes Suicide and Outkast and somehow it works really well.
Trust us. Listen to "The Girl Ain’t Preggers."
Scales
(Language of Stone Record/Drag City Records)
Diamond Days alumni from Kansas City, Mythical Beast brand of droning doom-psych is puncuated by the affecting vocals of lead singer Corinne Sweeney.
Trust us. Listen to "Cyrcle/Circle."
