Russell Crowe is one of those actors who I can’t decide whether to love or hate. He’s clearly talented, and has the ability to breathe some genuine pathos into characters I’d otherwise write off as fairly uninspired (*ahem*Gladiator*ahem*).
Then again, he also did this:
So, when news leaked that he’d be teaming with director Darren Aronofsky for a big-budget cinematic telling of Noah and the Ark, I was, understandably, conflicted. On one hand, Aronofsky’s Pi is one of my all time favorite films, and I suspect that if anyone can bring a biblical apocalypse to life, it’d be him (or, for a very different type of movie, Jerry Bruckheimer). On the other hand, if we’ve learned anything from nearly a century of movie making, it’s that Bible stories on the big screen – especially Old Testament, fire and brimstone ones – usually end up looking fairly goofy, in hindsight.
Still, I can’t help but get a little excited over these just-released seconds of teaser footage for Noah‘s upcoming full-length trailer (as an aside – Is that really where we’re at these days? Teasers for trailers? Jesus christ.) Crowe looks pretty dopey, and awfully Anglo for a Mesopotamian ship builder, but the few glimpses of the sheer scale of the production look promising.
Take a look:
Noah is scheduled for release in March, 2014
*****UPDATE*****
Well, here it is – the full trailer. What do you think? Better? Worse? Don’t care?
