We’ve all been thinking it, so I’ll just come out and say it – Ben Stiller’s been sucking pretty hard lately (The 12 people who saw 2012’s The Watch know what I mean). Yes, there was a brief flicker of legitimate quality in Greenberg, but Stiller quickly followed up his mumblecore exploration of regret and loneliness by excreting garbage like Tower Heist.
But, don’t give up hope – Walter Mitty is here to save the day.
On Tuesday afternoon we got our first look at Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a big-screen adaptation of James Thurber’s 1939 tale of a man and his daydreams, and… it looks pretty wonderful.
That’s not to say this is a sure thing. Stiller has big shoes to fill – Thurber’s story is a classic, and Danny Kaye’s 1947 film adaptation is a tough act to follow. Still, the trailer offers tantalizing glimpses of Stiller’s capacity to play much more than just a helpless clown. And, with a December 25th release date, you can be sure this will be the must-see Christmas Eve Jewvie (Jewvie (joo•vee) Noun: The movie all the Jews go see on Christmas eve, when they’re done with their General Tso’s Chicken).
There’s may very well be no redemption for making dreck like Little Fockers, but – at least from the looks of it – this is a good place to start.
I think Tower Heist was good–what a cast. And the Fockers was good too!! The ones who don’t like movies without actual shoot em up, blood and cars crashing, don’t enjoy more cerebral flicks. And usually aren’t happy enough to enjoy happy flicks. : ) They always get a bad review. Do we constantly have to rip people up to feel alive or better about ourselves. I thought you were gonna tell the secret life. You got us to read your trash by lying about the name of the article? Do good!! Peace. smh : )
