On Wednesday, President Barack Obama surprised many longtime political observes by announcing that the United States and Cuba were opening negotiations with the goal of normalizing relations between the two countries. The news of the possible thawing of US/Cuban relations comes paired with the return of political prisoner Alan Gross, who had spent the last five years a Cuban prison on the charge of espionage.
Following his mid-afternoon geopolitical surprise, the President hustled off to the annual White House Hanukkah party! There he hob-nobbed with assembled big-wigs from the organized Jewish community, among them Nigel Savage, CEO of Hazon, an international Jewish non-profit which focuses on issues of environmentalism and sustainability. There Savage snapped this video, which he posted to his Facebook wall, in which an unseen attendee gives the President of the United States the perfect Hanukkah present for today, of all days: A fine, fresh Cuban cigar.
