The Strange Case Of “Jon The Jew”

Every once in a while, during my usual internet stumblings (all for your enjoyment, folks!) I come across something so goddamned inexplicably weird that I have to leapfrog over the obvious offensiveness simply to wrap my head around the larger question of “what the hell is is this?”

So, seriously, what the hell is this??

Here’s what I can piece together:

Jon is a student at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, in the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information. He’s running for office in school’s Communication and Information Club (CI Club) – specifically, for the office of “Business Manager”.

Hey!” – Jon thinks to himself – “You know who’s good at business? The Jews! You know who I should pretend to be like? The Jews!” And so Jon sets out to prove to himself, and the world, that he knows everything there is to know about Jews, by making these helpful informational videos.

Here’s Episode 1, on Jews and food (or something)

Because Jews are schnorrers! Jon, you really get us!

This goes on for another three episodes – One on traveling like a Jew:

One on wearing clothes like a Jew:

And one on using “personal items” (?) like a Jew:

Finally Jon breaks character, and promises “No more tips on jewing!” – It’s time to see what he’d really do as Business Manager of the CI Club

Now, maybe “Jew” means something different in Malay, Mandarin, or Tamil (three of Singapore’s four official languages) but in English (the fourth language) it means…uh…well, not whatever Jon thinks it means. Still, overlooking the blatant (but fairly benign and presumably well-intentioned?) Anti-semitic stereotyping, there’s something undeniably charming about Jon’s giggly enthusiasm. Sure he has no idea what he’s talking about, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’d make a bad club officer, does it?

Still, if you can think of other – perhaps more accurate – Jew tips for Jon, he posted the following under his videos:

1. Follow me on twitter, @jonnyyramone
2. Tweet your BEST jew-tip to me with the hashtag #jonthejew
3. The top 3 tweets at the end of my campaign will win an awesome set of jew vouchers (like legit awesome, there’s G2000, Topshop, Adidas and a whole lot more)

So there you have it Heebketeers. Jon needs our help! Besides, who wouldn’t want an awesome set of “jew vouchers”?

What do you think?

Wow, I think this revoltingly anti-semitic and it’s sad that Jon doesn’t know it. That kind of anti-semitism must be common in his country. I hope he gets a terrible disease soon and dies in wretched agony.

Turns out Jon is not circumcised so I tweeted him and offered my services. Though not a Mohel I did stay @ a Holiday Inn Express last night!

I grew up in Singapore, and the respect the Chinese there have for Jews is genuine, if stereotyped. When national service was introduced, the PM got Israelis to set up the training and infrastructure because he admired the way a small country like Israel was more than able to stand up to the big bullies around it.

The Chinese are often called “the Jews of Asia”, as they are in every country, often resented, and over-represented in business.
