Sebastian Silva’s Sundance award-winning feature The Maid is now playing in select theaters throughout the U.S. and garnering more and more critical praise from the most discerning of critics. It’s unfortunate that the Chilean government did not nominate the film to represent the nation in the Best Foreign Film category in next year’s Oscars (that honor was bestowed upon a film about political prisoners during the military regime called Dawson Island). But when when I spoke with Silva today, he couldn’t have been in better spirits as his incredibly sensitive and altogether original portrait of a live-in housekeeper in a bougie Santiago home, had just been nominated for Best Feature film by the Gotham Awards.
Full disclosure: I’ve known Silva for quite some time–including during what he calls his "crazy messianic crisis period," when he was on a one-man quest to find Steven Spielberg. After a homeless man claiming to be an archangel (as well as Spielberg’s daughter’s godfather) convinced Silva to pitch an animation project of his to the movie mogul, he ended up going to Amblin Entertainment, Dreamworks, and even to Spielberg’s mom’s Beverly Hills eatery (where Silva says he had lunch with her) before joining a self-help group and returning to his native Chile and giving up on his quest.
"For two years, he [Spielberg] was a big figure in my life out of nowhere," Silva remembers. "I was out of my mind, but I still had a sense of humor about it."
Silva penned a script about the period, but admits it could use a re-write. He did not say whether he will grant Spielberg a meeting once the re-write is completed.
