This year, the catch began on June 6, but yesterday, I managed to sample four or five pieces at “Russ & Daughters”:http://www.russanddaughters.com/pr_herring.html in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. This fish is miles away from the pickled, rubbery chunks smothered in cream sauce and onions I’ve long associated with men’s club luncheons at the JCC. Perched ontop ontop of a thinly sliced potato, the silvery fish was as good as any piece of yellowtail sashimi outside of “Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market.”:http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3021.html
According to Russ & Daughters, Holland herring is an aphrodisiac. I’m not sure the few pieces I consumed make me want to dim the lights, place “_Hear, My Dear_”:http://www.amazon.com/Here-My-Dear-Marvin-Gaye/dp/B000001AKC onto the turntable and dial a late night call to Queen Beatrix, as much as they make me want to hoover a box of “Altoids”:http://www.altoids.com/index.do, but I do recommend that you stop by Russ & Daughters to sample this sumptuous sea-creature.
If you really want sumptuous, stop by Russ & Daughters and get yourself a Heeb sandwich.
Salkin is a liar, never knew Rosenkrantz, made this all up for a quick buck. The entire store is, at various points, fabricated, told third-person, or just simply hogwash. Pretty pathetic.
