Meet the New Boss?

For a long time, Jews and gays have essentially treated Tinseltown like a time-share, and for good reason. The last time Hollywood’s Jews went head to head with Hollywood’s gays for Oscar glory, it was 1994, and while Philadelphia got Tom Hanks an Oscar, pretty much everything else that year went to Schindler’s List. The Jews won, but it was bruising, and since then, Hollywood’s dominant interest groups have kept the truce, and worked assiduously to avoid even the appearance of conflict. Witness this year’s front runners–the Holocaust movie wasn’t about Jews, and the gay movie was. But a funny thing happened on the way to the red carpet–and top honors went to the Indians (we know, we know, the director wasn’t). Is this a blip on the radar screen, or a sign of the times? We at Jewdar don’t know, but we’re glad that at least some Jews–like Israel’s chief rabbis, pictured above, at an interfaith conference last year–are savvy enough to hitch their schwarma to the Hindus’ dharma.
