Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back to the Pasture

Time will tell whether “_Eagle Vs Shark_”:http://www.eaglevsshark.net/ (hitting theaters today) and “_Flight of the Conchords_,”:http://www.hbo.com/conchords/ (premiering on HBO this Sunday) end up doing for New Zealand what Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalaz Inarritu did for Mexico. But, while _Eagle_ and _Flight_ bask in buzz, IFC’s “_Black Sheep_”:http://www.blacksheep-themovie.com/ (premiering June 22) might actually be the prize of the New Zealand flock.

The film, which I will someday pair as part of a double feature with the “_Black Sheep_”:http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Black_Sheep/60023502?trkid=189530&strkid=1012743261_0_0 starring Chris Farley, takes place on a New Zealand sheep farm, where a reckless genetic engineering experiment goes horribly wrong and turns its cuddly cattle into bloodthirsty killers.

Simultaneously riffing on horror mainstays like “_The Birds_”:http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Birds/308926?trkid=181036&strkid=1623941323_2_0 and cult-classics like “_Piranha_,”:http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Piranha/858742?trkid=189530&strkid=212667565_0_0 debut director Jonathan King wisely keeps the film from reaching the precipice of farce, insuring that it ends up being more than a series of sheep-shagging and methane jokes. You heard it here: _Black Sheep_ is the best movie to showcase a wooly quadruped since Elaine Giftos found suspicious white hairs on Gene Wilder in “_Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask_.”:http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Everything_You_Always_Wanted_to_Know_About_Sex_But_Were_Afraid_to_Ask/60001205?trkid=189530&strkid=360387963_0_0
