Eat Your Words

Good thing I’m nearly done with higher education–because the GREs just got harder.

The good people at Merriam-Webster have introduced around 100 new words into the latest edition of their dictionary.

My favorite? “Mondegreen,” which is dork for "a word or phrase that results from a mishearing of something said or sung."

Apparently, the word comes from a Scottish tune containing the line “laid him on the green,” which—to the untrained ear—sounds like “Lady Mondegreen.”

With all the buzzing in the news about the mishaps of Madge, I couldn’t help but think of my favorite mondegreen, from Madonna’s "La Isla Bonita", in which the songstress seems to croon, “Last night I dreamt of some bagels.” Perhaps it was a premonition of what was to come?

What do you think?
