Eagle and Talon: The _Heeb_ Interview

It’s safe to say that there has been a recent fascination in the music world with revisiting the 1990s. Examples range from Deerhunter and Wavves tackling the lo-fi fuzz practiced by luminaries like Pavement and the swirling shoegaze that current bands like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are mastering.

Los Angeles duo Eagle and Talon sound something like Sleater-Kinney, The Breeders and PJ Harvey–all amazing artists who made their impact in the perceeding decade–with a twist.

Singer/guitarist Kim (pictured left) talked with Heeb about the band’s name, writing songs and moisturizer.

Does it make it easier being a two-person band? Since there are fewer people trying to get their ideas into writing a song?

Yes, probably. But I wouldn’t know, because Alice is the only person I’ve ever been in a band with. If we were writing with more musicians I would imagine it would be a bad scene, as I have very strong/clear ideas of what I want and having to negotiate with more people would likely drive me crazy. We’re both very picky, which is why we wrote and played most of the parts on the record.

Reggie Watts has been known to do some beatboxing with you guys on stage–are you going to invite him to become part of the band, or does he just not cut the mustard?

He definitely cuts the mustard! Reggie is our number one creative love, but he travels way too much to be a permanent member of the band. However, I do see more collaboration in our futures. In the meantime, go see him perform in New York or Australia and imagine us there!

How did you guys come up with the name? Are there a lot of eagles in L.A.? Or do you just really like birds of prey?

It’s kind of a long story, but when we first started playing together we were called Night Rabbits. We tested out new material at open mics, but didn’t want the name to get a bad reputation–we were bad and sounded like we didn’t know anything–so every time we played we came up with a different name. Before going on stage one night at Mr. T’s Bowl, the person asked our band’s name and I answered ‘Eagle and Talon’ and it just stuck. The Eagle Talon was a popular car in Winnipeg where I grew up and I just think it’s so ugly.

One of your songs is ‘Moisturizer,’ and you sing that your face is ‘always itchy.’ Have you considered switching brands?

I just play drums and be supportive on that song. ‘Moisturizer’ is written by Miss Alice Talon, but I think she’s okay. The song is about how some people in her family have itchy faces and that it makes her sad.

You guys sound like a lot of things I loved about the ’90s–if you had to pick, what would you say is the best clothing style to come out of the entire decade? I pick Cross Colours and Zubaz.
