Diamond Days Fest: Day One Recap

“Rock Star Bar”:http://www.myspace.com/rockysrockstarbar may be, like, a thousand blocks away from the L stop. The men’s room stalls may lack functioning locks. The stench of smoke may be so thick that you find yourself fantasizing about Mayor Bloomberg busting into the place on a white horse. But during day one of the “Diamond Days Fest,”:http://www.myspace.com/diamonddaysfest nobody was complaining. (And that’s a big deal, when you consider how much _Heeb_ readers love to complain.)

“Dead Unicorn”:http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=10485280 is probably my new favorite band. Consisting of singing drummer Zac Shaw and screaming bassist Paul Heath, the band sites apocalypse, meteors and plague as its major influences. Zac and Paul rated their Diamond Days performance “a five” on a scale of 1-10 (a thunderstorm of significant strength, perhaps?). Other stand-out performances I witnessed last night included the remarkably tight, thrash-rock outfit “Tournament”:http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=121034832 and the layered noise of “Warmth,”:http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=95771696 whose drummer hits so wildly it looks like he’s fending off zombies.

Dead Unicorn ” Chernobyl ” reminiscent of The Clash “London Calling.” Classic punk.
