Consumerism for Change?

As the economy sinks slowly down the tubes, one man proving to be recession-proof is Shepard Fairey. The New York Times reports that the street artist, whose first project involved infiltrating city streets with his Andre the Giant has a Posse stickers and posters, has been hired by Saks Fifth Avenue to create a bold marketing campaign for the coming season. The campaign, inspired by Russian Constructivist designer Alexander Rodchenko, will feature propaganda fueled designs like shopping bags that scream "Want it!" and an ad whose slogan reads "Arm yourself…with a slouchy bag"

The news was preceded by The National Portrait Gallery’s announcement that they have acquired Fairey’s original "Obama Hope" image for their permanent collection. The mixed media collage was donated to the museum by Washington-based lobbyists and collectors Heather and Tony Podesta whose brother John is co-chairman of Obama’s transition team, in memory of the Podestas’ mother, an Obama supporter since 2004. I’ve decided to capitalize on Fairey’s success by taking bids for the artist’s email address…
