Casting Hopefuls for _The Hobbit_

Last weekend at Comic-Con in San Diego, Lord of the Rings‘ Peter Jackson said he would be submitting a script for The Hobbit to Warner Bros. in the coming weeks.

As soon as Jackson gets the green light, he will begin casting for the role of Bilbo Baggins. This is about the time that the Comic-Con fan boys soiled their cargo pants, while I yawned. Seriously, who can handle another three hours of horses, bearded Englishmen and pasty midgets?

So, to shake things up, here are the five least predictable talents that the New Zealand film boss should consider to fill the shoes of the titular midget:

5. Tony Cox

If Mrs. Huxtable can play the part of the old lady in Broadway’s August: Osage County, I see no reason why the foul-mouthed crook from Bad Santa shouldn’t have a decent post-racial shot at an audition.

4. Mel Brooks

He already has the costume.

3. Roseanne Barr

After the inevitable wave of press that’ll come her way this summer from dressing up as you-know-who, perhaps now is the time for her return to the big screen. A sequel to She-Devil would suffice as well.

2. Slimer

They should just save money on the cast and CGI it up with this ectoplasmic piglet.

1. Samm Levine

The Freaks and Geeks star is arguably at the height of his career after scoring a bit part in Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and then the July/August JVibe teen mag cover. The kosher kiddo could very well nab the lead.

If not, he is always welcome to review Marx Brothers books for us again.

What do you think?

Hehe, great post! You know, I would actually love to see that little guy from Austin Powers playing a hobbit. He could wear that same wig Bilbo wore in the other movies!
