The three defining characteristics of Neo-Nazis are typically as follows:
They hate everyone unlike themselves
The love to march around
They’re not that bright.
As residents of the small Bavarian town of Wunsiedel recently demonstrated, those three attributes can, in fact, be put to very good use with a little forethought, some cheeky banners, and a table full of bananas.
As a result of having been a one-time burial site for Nazi big-wig Rudolph Hess (he’s since been exhumed and his remains destroyed), Wunsiedel has for the past twenty five years been the site of an annual Nazi parade. The town’s residents are (understandably) pretty fed up with a bunch of jackbooted jackasses tromping past their homes, and so, conspiring with the anti-extremeist Rechts gegen Rechts (“Right against Right”) organization, they pulled off what is probably my favorite Nazi-themed prank of all time. Reports The Guardian:
Without the marchers’ knowledge, local residents and businesses sponsored the 250 participants of the march on 15 November in what was dubbed Germany’s “most involuntary walkathon”. For every metre they walked, €10 went to a programme called EXIT Deutschland, which helps people escape extremist groups.
Yes, these enterprising Bavarian townsfolk turned a Neo-Nazi march into a charity walk to combat…Neo-Nazis. What’s more, the Nazis learned of their unwitting participation while en route by way of some A+ snarky banners hung roadside. There was even a snack table covered in bananas labeled Mein Mampf (“My munch”), should the marching fascists have needed an potassium pick-me up in order to cross the finish line. Scowling skinheads deep-throating bananas, having just learned that they’re raising money for charity. These townspeople are geniuses.
Here’s footage from the walkathon, chock full of Neo-Nazis looking painfully, hilariously confused as they march past signs reading “If The Fuhrer Only Knew”
All things told, the Nazis – too proud/stupid to stop their slog through the streets of Wunsiedel – crossed the finish line, and in doing so raised €10,000 to help put an end to their very existence.
Bavaria: Delicious pretzels, even more delicious pranks.
