“Okay Then”: A Response to “Naked Pictures, Why Women Should Never Send One”

Elite Daily is a webzine focusing on the pressing issues facing Generation Y. Accordingly, they recently introduced a column titled “Generation whY?!” which addresses the stupid things Gen-Y tends to do. The premiere installment is written by Tyler Gildin (a runner-up of The Jewish Week’s Funniest Jewish Comedian Competition) and deals with the epidemic of women sending naked photos as text messages. Tyler’s message is clear: Women should never under any circumstances send a naked picture of themselves to any man.

“Well,” I thought. “Now I’ll never get to find out why this sexting thing is all the rage.”

Is Gildin correct when he says it’s not worth the risk? He posits that if you send naked pictures to a man he will almost definitely lose respect for you. Men, Gildin explains, are not to be trusted with this kind of content, because while they might not post it online, they will definitely pass it around to their friends. Even if you trust them now, one day that guy will feel scorned and be unable to stop themselves from blasting your beautiful breasts to all their buds. Bottom line? Men cannot be trusted with the naked pictures you send them. As Gildin is a man, clearly he must know how men think. (And hey, as someone who, through this very magazine, has experienced the possibility of strange men masturbating to my pictures, I can attest that once a picture is posted it may end up in unexpected places.)

Bummer.

Sexting-Prohibido-FDGDo bikini shots even count as sexts? I’m so new to all this.

Then it came to me – the obvious solution: WOMEN SHOULD ONLY SEND NAKED PICTURES OF THEMSELVES TO OTHER WOMEN.

If men are the problem here, then clearly women shouldn’t send them their pictures, BUT that doesn’t mean women have to stop sending nudie pics altogether! Think about it: Of all the horrible leaked-naked-picture-stories you’ve read about – whether they involve suburban teens or celebrities – have you read anything about any of those pictures having been leaked by a lesbian? Look, I’m not saying it’s never happened, or that it would never happen, but at least according to Gildin’s thesis, it doesn’t seem to be much of a problem. (That said, I wouldn’t recommend it if you are a lesbian in politics. Politics assures that any of your previous digital romps will absolutely go public. Probably at the worst possible time.)

Anthony-Weiner-11Fun Fact: If you search “Sexting Jewish” you get a picture of this guy.

Now, you might ask, “Ah, but doesn’t Gilden also say that a naked picture will make someone lose respect for you?”  Fair point. So, I asked myself, “If a dude I was dating sent me an unprompted dick pic, would I still respect him?” The clear answer? No. But then again, I don’t ever want to see a dick pic – any dick pic – regardless of my relationship status. 99.5% of dicks are simply not attractive, and 100% of dicks are not attractive when removed from the context of the dude to which they are attached. This is not necessarily true for vaginas, and it is most absolutely, definitely, so obviously not true for boobs. The fact that I may lose respect for a guy who sends me a picture of his junk has nothing to do with him being slutty, and has everything to do with him not realizing how unappealing that is. But a woman, on the other hand? If a girl I was dating sent me a high-def picture of her cleavage, I would be delighted – especially is it was tastefully framed and used a fun filter.

So there it is. Ladies, do not trust men to handle your oh-so-delightfully naughty selfies, but do feel free to send your sexy snapshots, perky pictures, and naked negatives to other women. Straight women, I’m sorry if this doesn’t sound like much fun to you, but lesbians and bi-sexuals, I think we have a big WIN on our hands. And on our cell phones.

    Megan-

While posing a risk by sharing sexty sensitive pics, it’s flatly wrong to believe all and every man will compromise a woman uncontrollably.

    from the article:
“Gilden explains, are not to be trusted with this kind of content, because while they might not post it online, they will definitely pass it around to their friends.”

As a guy who does totally enjoy sexting pics with certain members of the opposite sex who share reciprocal interest, I’d never compromise that trust and never have.

Dumb decisions can be made both both genders, so to site your interviewee and peg men alone for bad sexting decisions is big time fallacious logic. Stupidity is gender-less.

As the occasional reader of heeb and a heeb male myself, I find this article smacks of anti-male sexism. Boo, please be more thoughtful in your approach in the future.

The snarky approach, which is seemingly witty and cute at first, masks nastily nature divisive to both genders.

Men and women, boys and girls both need to be smart.

I certainly respected your distaste for the random dong snap. It’s understandable. We must not forget though, what titillates is unique to the individual. And, I know many women, who in social situations might be less than forthcoming (no pun intended) about appreciating a peek of that nature.

One last point, Anthony Weiner clearly made bad choices and his pic was not leaked by a man, but by the woman, which also illustrates that leaking sexted images is not only limited to men’s leakage alone.

With no regard to gender- Guy and girls both, just be smart about where you might send your wiener.

WELL FIRST OF ALL AS A MAN I DON’T THINK I CAN’T TRUST A GUY NAMED DULCE, WHICH TRANSLATED FROM SPANISH MEANS “CANDY”. BUT
ON THE ARTICLE ITSELF, WE ALL HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT WHEN WE PASS OUR PHONE TO SHOW AN INNOCENT PICTURE THATS WAS TAKEN AT THE KNICKS GAME AND OUR FRIENDS DECIDE TO SLIDE THE SCREEN FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND A RANDOM BOOB APPEAR, IT’S NOT OUR FAULT THAT OUR FRIENDS ARE NOSY. ALSO WE HAVE TO REMEMBER AS HUMANS WE LOSE OUR PHONES LEFT AND RIGHT AND WE SHOULD JUST SEND THEM ALL TO OUR EMAIL AND MAKE SURE WE HAVE SUPER SAFE PASSWORD AND IT’S NOT ON YOUR PHONE.

    Hey Dulce,

Don’t call me “Boo,” I find it offensive and it also reminds me of ghosts which scare me.

    UH… This here:

“One last point, Anthony Weiner clearly made bad choices and his pic was not leaked by a man, but by the woman”

Is wrong. Anthony Weiner leaked the image himself in a mistaken Twitter blast.

All the rest of the article silly. Some men are untrustworthy, others aren’t. Same goes for women. As to the relative attractiveness of a given dick-pic… depends on somewhat on the dick, but more especially on viewing audience. Megan Sass may find dicks unattractive by the degrees and percentages she shared with us, but those are her aesthetics. Other people, men and women both, will have different ones.

As to the wisdom of sharing naked pictures… Only do it if you don’t care and have nothing to lose by them getting out one day. Otherwise you’re taking your chances.

Did Dulce mean to call you Boo or did he mean it as in ‘boo! I don’t like what you’re saying’?

I thought it was quite interesting and as a straight male will do as you say and only send pics of my breasts to women.

I highly recommend that you don’t post anything you would not want to get out to the public and also realize that one wrong push of a number could get you in legal trouble if you send to the wrong person. There have been many cases where people have suffered negative consequences for mistakes with Mr. Weiner as one example. I feel sorry for Mr. Weiner as his career was ruined with a minor error he made on his twitter account. Just be very, very careful and password protect your smart phones.
