A smiling picture of brutally slain Jew Ilan Halimi appeared in an advertisement for Qiran, the online Muslim Canadian dating service. In 2006, Halimi was tortured for twenty-four days by a Muslim gang. In July of this year, gang leader Yousseuf Fofana was sentenced to life in prison. Twenty-four other members received sentences ranging from six months suspension to 18 years in prison.

Yesterday, a French blogger noticed Halimi’s photo on Qiran and immediately contacted the dating site.

Qiran’s management expressed "deep sorrow" for any pain the mistake caused Halimi’s family, and explained the picture was taken from a member’s profile page. Like many dating sites, Qiran reserves permission to use profile pictures as advertisements. Staff members who chose Halimi’s photo were unaware of his terrible story.

A Google spokesperson further explained that such advertisements are usually published automatically and don’t even go through manual screening. However, the question still remains as to which Qiran member thought posting an image of a tortured and murdered Jew would increase his/her chances of an internet love match.

After finding out about the mistake Ruth Halimi, Ilan’s mother, told Ynet "this is absolutely awful."Here’s hoping the site’s better at matchmaking than creating ad campaigns. Otherwise, there will be a lot of lonely Muslims in Canada.
